EAST MEADOW, N.Y.
(May 4, 2001) - The Women’s Sports Foundation and
the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) announced the winner of the
2001 National Female Equestrian Award. The award recognizes an outstanding
female equestrian for her accomplishments as a horsewoman and as an
athlete. This year’s winner, Barbra A. Schulte from Brenham, Texas,
received a $2,000 grant for her equestrian career pursuits.
Schulte, a professional cutting horse trainer and a Certified Personal
Performance Coach, pioneered personal performance training in the
equestrian world. In cutting, Schulte enjoys both training and showing
young cutting horses on a national level. She has made history as the
first woman to win national events, including the National Cutting Horse
Association (NCHA) Derby, NCHA Superstakes Classic and the prestigious
Augusta Futurity. She placed in the top ten at the 2000 AQHA World Show in
junior cutting and placed 11th in senior cutting.
An active participant in public service programs for AQHA, Schulte
shares her talent with riders of all disciplines through her Mentally
Tough Program, in which she trains recreational and competitive riders
from the inside out. Her competitive goal is to win an AQHA World
Championship.
"This is a great opportunity to represent the countless
equestrians across the world and acknowledge the significant role that
women play in the equine and sports industry," said Barbra Schulte,
2001 National Female Equestrian Award Winner. "I am proud to
represent all equestrians as a professional athlete and commend them for
the effort put forth, not to physically but emotionally, and encourage
every horse enthusiast to pursue their dreams."
"Barbra Schulte has demonstrated the true dedication of an
athlete," said AQHA Executive Vice President Bill Brewer. "She
has successfully combined her life as a mother, trainer, wife and athlete.
She has served our organization as an educator and humanitarian. Barbra is
very deserving of this award as she epitomizes the role athletes and
mentors should play."
“The Women’s Sports Foundation is honored to be involved with the
American Quarter Horse Association so that athletes like Barbra Schulte
are given the recognition they deserve,” said Women’s Sports
Foundation President Julie Foudy. “This program allows us to use the
strengths of both organizations to create greater opportunities for girls
and women in sports and fitness.”
