- The stirrup should not hurt your foot, nor cause the foot to ache.
- The stirrup should not rub on the side of the your foot.
- The stirrup should not cause foot fatigue after your have been in
the saddle awhile.
- The stirrup should not press against your shins.
- The stirrup should be made of strong material at its throat so that
it will not bow with time and weight.
- The stirrup should provide stability for the foot, but still allow
the foot to be flexible.
- The leather tread or the leather covering should not have seams that
cause uncomfortable pressure or disturb your balance.
- The tread width of the stirrup should provide the support that you
need for the kind of riding in which you primarily engage.
- The stirrup should be wide enough so that you can slide your foot in
and out of it with ease, yet it should not be so wide that the foot
"wallows" in the stirrup. A good rule of thumb is a finger width
of clearance on each side.
- The stirrup should be compatible with your boot heel.
